Lovely stuff drew, they're young Western Screech-Owls. I wish I had them in my back garden but you get them in, frankly, nicer neighbourhood's than mine. I think the locals have eaten the ones round here...

I got this photo of an even younger owl in NW Tucson. Gonzo!

Owls grow their wing feathers first and can leave the nest looking like balls of fluff but capable of flying. A highly interesting fact.

For the car bores out there.

A pic from the Cholmondely Pageant of Power today (18th July).

GEDC0477.jpg

In the foreground a little 24 litre Napier Bentley, in the background (No. 23) a 46 litre BMW engined 'Brutus', and in the centre the even more scary 54 litre Packard engined Bentley.

When these cars engines were running (with flames coming from exhausts) children were crying, women were fainting, and car alarms were going off for miles around.

Is there a midget in thre red Bentley?

Taken with a Sony Ericsson C510, at yesterday evening's fantastic display:

They're currently unedited. I realise the second one, especially, could be a bit better.

That's my arty footballing effort taken at Doncaster in the snow with iPhone and changed to B/W in photoshop app.

Very 1960's is that!

Nice bit of coast, that. My brother, the erstwhile poster Virkie Fox, looks after Puffins as part of his job on Shetland.

Bad light is frequently a problem for wildlife photography in the UK... not so in Arizona :icon_cool Here's my latest lot.

Berylline-Hummingbird-Miller-Canyon-10-0724-02.jpg
SE Arizona is the land of the hummingbird. There are more species to the south of Tucson than the rest of North American put together. This is one of the rarest, a Berylline Hummingbird, collecting nesting material. This species can only be seen at two places in North America (both near here) and has only been confirmed breeding in the USA three times previously.

Blue-throated-Hummingbird-Miller-Canyon-10-0724-06.jpg
Blue-throated Hummingbird. North America's largest hummer (sparrow-sized) and only seen in the mountains south of Tucson.

Broad-billed-Hummingbird-Ash-Canyon-10-0724-02.jpg
Broad-billed Hummingbird. My personal favourite, and another that doesn't even get as far north as Phoenix.

Broad-tailed-Hummingbird-Miller-Canyon-10-0724-02.jpg
Broad-tailed Hummingbird. Only found above 4000 feet.

Lucifer-x-Annas-Hummingbird-Ash-Canyon-10-0724-02.jpg
Hummingbirds are liable to hybridize more than almost any other type of bird. This is a combination that had never been recorded before this bird was found last week, a hybrid between the relatively common Anna's Hummingbird and the ultra-rare Lucifer Hummingbird.

Like the Berylline Hummingbird, this one, White-eared Hummingbird, is mega rare in North America and can be reliably found at just one place, Miller Canyon high in the Huachuca Mountains. Like all hummingbirds, the irridescent feathers on the males look black when seen from most angles....

And then they turn their heads and... WOW!

A few non-hummingbird ones...

Spotted Owl. A much sought after species in the mountains here.

Flame-Skimmer-Miller-Canyon-10-0724-01.jpg
Flame Skimmer dragonfly.

Leaf-footed-Bug-Miller-Canyon-10-0724-01.jpg
Some sort of leaf-footed bug, I think.

Yarrows-Spiny-Lizard-Miller-Canyon-10-0724-04.jpg
Yarrow's Spiny Lizard.
