He wasn't a bad player either

Birch was better than anyone we have got at the moment. He was a sort of Steve Howard strong selfless and brave but good enough for the First Divion - good enough that Alf Ramsey picked him for England Under 23 as a striker. However, he was not quite a sharp enough finisher at the highest level. Jimmy Bloomfield astute as ever brought in the great Frank Worthington but aware of Birch's qualities moved him back to midfield which I think turned out to be his best position.

Birch and Keith Weller signed on the same day - what a good day for Leicester that was. Weller was the best Leicester winger and most exciting Leicester player I have ever seen. Both were not only very effective players but seemed to play with a smile on their faces.
They were both true legends.

Oh crikey, I must be about your age but to compare the Birch with Steve Howard?

He'll wet his pants laughing if he ever gets told of it. Yes he was a decent midfielder but no better than Oakley or Wellens and definitely never as good as King.

Take the nostalgia specs off and get real!
