Ross McCormack, the same age and a fellow proven Championship striker with no experience of the PL has just been sold for £11m!! £7m isn't too bad by today's standards.

Just because one transfer is silly money doesn't mean everything else is good value for money in comparison. That's like saying Andy Carroll's £35mil to Liverpool was not to bad by the standards of the day when Fernando Torres went for £50mil!

McCormack was silly money as well. Besides, McCormack is a better striker at least in the Championship which is the division Fulham are in and is a much safer bet for their position than Ulloa is in ours.

Also, the fee is more than £7mil, some twitter accounts in Brighton claiming the fee will rise to £9mil.

This. It's a gamble....if it works out then great, otherwise we have a signing to put memories of Akinbiyi away.

Derby had a certain player called Steve Howard in 2007 in their illl fated go at trying to stay in the Premier League that season.

Ulloa reminds me a bit of Howard, although he is younger than Howard was at that time, and hopefully more skillfull. It may not be so much the goals he scores but those he sets up.

Howard scored 1 goal in 20 appearances , so lets hope both the new player and City have better luck.

We must trust the management team. £7m seems ridiculous for Ulloa, though we've seen stranger things.
Ulloa's game isn't solely about goals, his presence offers something different. This will create healthy competition between Vardy, Nugent etc...

Given the addition of Albrighton, and considering we already have Knockaert and Mahrez, there is plenty of competition for next season.
Will we play a 4-2-3-1, and if so who will be the 2? Who will be the 3 and who will be the 1? Our team is hungry, they all want to do well, and this will make them play better and work harder.

There is absolutely no reason why James or Drinkwater can't move forward in their careers like Lallana has for example. All players start at the bottom and work their way up. I'm sure when Southampton got promotion they didn't know Lallana would be sold on for £25m. Just because these players aren't proven YET, in the PL, there's nothing to suggest they won't be proven this time next year. Vardy might do a Rickie Lambert and score 14+ goals, perhaps Moore will become a leading CB? Maybe Mahrez will take the division by storm. We just don't know, but NP and his team most definitely have a better idea than the fans have. They've played and coached in the PL and they know their players better than we do.

Yes, I do look at teams like Newcastle signing Riviere for £6m and Besiktas signing the proven Ba for £8m and wonder why we wouldn't go for these two as they seem more likely to do a better job - possibly the wages would be a stumbling block. Whatever the case, NP doesn't seem to want them, for whatever reason that is, and so we trust him and move forward, after all, he's the one who's in charge and given this club PL football again after 7 full-time managers couldn't.

Excellent post. Well said.

We've chased this fella for weeks and this is our fifth offer for him so we should all be very pleased that it's finally coming to a successful conclusion. Either we back Steve Walsh's judgement or we don't. He's right more than he's wrong.

This coming season will be completely different to last year in every possible way. We will not be playing two strikers very often, we will not be winning very often. In many games, we will not have the ball very often. This guy sounds exactly what we need to be honest. A strong physical presence that can hold up the ball, bring others into the game and finish. I don't give a shiny shite how much he's costing.

Just get it done and move onto the next target.

Boom!! Exactly Mr Anus sniffer

I'm not convinced, when was the last time a big money transfer ever paid off for us? However we need to add to the squad, ours is a bit thin on the ground so in that respect it will be a much welcome acquisition. Hopefully a few more, the defence and fullback positions in particular especially need adding to..

£7 million for Ulloa IS ridiculous money but, I will be pleased if the rumour is true, and the deal goes through.

It seems to me, that our management team are damned if they do, and damned if they don't make over the odds signings. One club cannot bring common sense back to the Premier League transfer market. We may end the season regretting the failure to sign Frazier Campbell, if his goals keep Palace in the top league and we were to fail. Nigel Pearson can appear to stand by his principles to the detriment of our main goal (staying in this league). It will be a positive sign, if he has accepted that one cannot always be entirely sensible in the transfer market.

Liking those Palace signings, they will be strong I think.

Indeed. Hull and Palace have both strengthened well since promotion last year. Palace with Pulis will do very solidly, although I think Hull will struggle due to Europe.

We currently appear to look like we are lacking true PL quality, although as people have repeatedly pointed out, our whole squad are basically unknowns.

Pearson said at the start of the season that he only wanted to sign players who had PL experience, or were exceptional young talent. I just don't see either of those categories in Ulloa. I understand that we have to spend silly money at this stage, but can we not spend silly money on exceptional talent abroad? Enner Valencia (exceptional could be too strong a word) just signed for 12 million to West Ham. I'd rather have him than Ulloa for 7.

I thought the Valencia deal was £20m

The thing that gets me is that the club were saying they were planning for the Premier League from Christmas, there doesn't seem to have been too much planned.

Has it not occured to people that Pearson, Walsh etc probably have been working on signings for many many months and that the players we identified either turned out to be unsuitable, too greedy or just didn't fancy coming to us? I don't buy into this thought that the club have been sitting on their hands and now started panic buying. Futhermore, Pearson himself said that people would be very surprised at some of the players that we have tried to sign but have been unsuccessful in doing so.

My main issue is the fact we have signed 1 free defender who is about past it at this level.

If we have been planning since Christmas or before I find it very odd that we are going into a Premier League season with jeff schlupp as our left back cover.

Agree totally with this. It doesn't have to be a window to have a super scout list at the ready. Also I think if he wasn't buying out of 'panic', Ulloa would have been signed in June and on the plane to Austria.

I am yet to make up my mind on whether this is a good transfer. I just feel a little disappointed

Also, surely we had more than just the one backup defensive player we knew wouldn't be too greedy or didn't fancy coming to us.
