In my view, the Maddison speculation is nonsense. It's much more likely to be his agent positioning for an improvement in his contract.

However the Fofana stuff is interesting. There must be a valuation that makes sense to sell. If we can get Chelsea to pay £80m I think selling is a no brainer. Yes, he could become the best defender in the world. He could just as easily become a bit injury prone and his value has already peaked.

If I trusted our recruitment team, I'd push this one. The problem we have is a crippling mess behind the scenes. No wonder we're paralysed as a club.

Chelsea are about to pay £50m for Cucurella. That on top of the other signings they have made makes any talk of them spending 80m or more on Fofana very unlikely.

I think they will be angling for a cash plus player/players deal.
