Speculation The hysterically annoying, and totally unfounded, but traditional, January 2024 rumours thread.

What I think the point they're trying to make - that Saudi and China no longer spending big will have a knock on effect that will especially be felt by clubs like ours - seems fair though

I saw those reports and have decided to ignore them. We cannot possibly be so stupid as to repeat the exact same mistakes that got us into this mess all over again.
Other than his obvious lack of pace. If he is played in the correct position and with the correct players around him, why would we not discuss a contract renewal for him?

He has been a revelation this season (along with all the other so called differs) who were mismanaged over the previous two seasons.

What does he lack (bar pace) that we need from a player in his position?

It's difficult to know where to start. In summary, if you played someone like Vestergaard in the PL, you have to play far too deep and we'd be ripped to shreds.

We started this season trying to play a higher line and Vestergaard got caught out regularly. That's why he picked up so many bookings in his first appearances this season. We have since dropped quite a bit which protects him. You can do it in the Championship because the level of opposition is shite. In the PL, we'd concede so many goals it's terrifying.

We will need more defensive pace next season to play a higher line and I can't see any of Vestergaard, Faes, Souttar or Coady being capable of it. It's why I'm so keen to see us play the likes of Nelson and Doyle as much as possible from here on in. We need to know if they could do a job next year or not.

None of that is personal about Vestergaard. However, I do have an issue with him too. I don't forget how he got when the going got tough over the previous couple of years. He'll also be 32 at the start of next season and he'll demand a lot more money than he's worth.

Fair enough. I guess it partially depends on how much he would cost.

Offering Vestergaard a contract makes complete sense. He's being used correctly now and it shows. There is no suggestion he'd be first choice, but he's absolutely capable.

So I’m guessing we do the following:

Attempt to secure Wilf, Vestergaard and Vardy.

Allow Nacho, Praet, Albrighton to walk.

Sign Fatawu. Not Yunus or Doyle.
I think that’s about right, perhaps with the caveat of keeping/signing Albrighton and Yunus?
