I’m sure that I’ll take a bit of stick for talking about the ‘run in’ this early in the season, but I, for one, am excited that we’re even in with a chance of making the play-offs at this stage. So, I thought I’d have a look at how many points we might need to get there. My conclusion was 70, meaning that we’d need 27 points from the remaining 18 games (8 home, 10 away). Realistically, this means we would need to win 7 or 8 of the remaining matches. Personally, I think it’s do-able, but I think we’ll come up short (could be tasty if it's us and Boro fighting for 6th come the last day). I’d be interested to hear others’ views as to what the ‘magic number’ might be.

Middlesbrough (h)

Of course, maybe we should be considering the magic number to avoid relegation, in which case I think 3 wins will suffice!

I think that all bets must be off this season as to how many points are required for promotion or, to avoid relegation. It is amazing that after thirty games, the difference between the play offs and the relegation zone is eleven points.

Three away matches on the trot to The Sheep, Cardif and Brum could be a spanner in the works.

I can't see why we won't be in with a shout though. It's not like there are many teams in the play-off mix currently playing any better or more consistent than us.

Of course, the Magic Number for the play-offs could all change if Pompey go bust and 7th place is good enough...

...Or if Cardiff get docked 10 points...

...Not that I'd wish this on either club obviously.

I must be doing something wrong, I can't see anything there.

There isn't anything there. I think the business they were trying to get going failed to take off.
Three members of this site registered using magicnumbers.info email addresses - but I think they were all the same person, who had previously used a different name.
Sadly he died in a car crash in South America :icon_wink
