With a polite complaint, I'm going to get 100% of what I've paid back. Taking them to the Small Claims Court, I'm still going to have to pay them what they are due.

I suppose it depends on whether you'll get any response from them and whether they'll refund any, or all, of what you've paid, no guarantee of that.

£1000 compensation for the distress and embarrassment seems reasonable to me, plus the knowledge they'll have a CCJ recorded against them would make me smile

You don't owe them the courtesy of a polite complaint Boc. Just sue them, it's just a simple County Court form. I wouldn't be surprised if you could do it online.

Just make sure that you have followed the guidance on the HMCS website, and read the relevant and lovely Procedural Rules before submitting your claim....

Its a blessing in disguise sometimes. I hadn't bothered looking for better jobs until that (plus one or two other things) pushed me to do so. Within two weeks I got a job paying 5k more and in a company thats not screwed. I often thank HR at my old place for motivating me to do so.
