Wild times indeed.

Fire eaters sat on the bass cabs, almost naked mime artists staring at you from the stage, chaos magicians in the bar, blokes selling magic mushrooms from a hot dog van, prostitutes specialising in bondage sessions handing out business cards in the foyer at Rock City.

I swear I wouldn't swap my youth for any era before or since. I was 17 first time I saw them. If I were 17 today I'd probably be in my bedroom on an Xbox or PS5, waiting to leave home in about 10 years.

My son told me a few weeks ago that he was back in hospital and I heard last week that he was released from hospital. I said then that he probably wouldn't make it until Christmas

His life crossed over with my 1 year old son’s, pretty cool in a way I guess.

An absolutely colossal (and awful) figure of the 20th century. If you’ve not seen Ken Burns’ The Vietnam War then the series is currently available on Sky. Get it downloaded if you can because it needs to be seen.

Talking to my mate about this today & he ended up giving me what could well be a decent enough eulogy for Shane. " Bob Dylan. If he'd been Irish, pissed half his life & looked like a garden gnome with rickets "

Would make a fine headstone that.

I remember him on John Peels shows. Always found him interesting and challenging. Wasn't like the regular stuff I was listening to at the time, but I'd always try to hear his work.

Literally just read about this. ****ing gutted.

A personal one for me as I met him quite a few times, in situations that were weirdly varied. From backstage at a punk gig to a book signing, to a business lunch to a poetry reading.

It's not often in life that you meet people who are clearly beyond normal in terms of their talent, intellect or general presence. Ben was all three.

I saw him only a couple of weeks after his Peaky Blinders debut, which we both thought was a hilarious blag.

" Must have taken you months to get into the character of a Brummie troublemaker eh? What with you being just a poncy poet & that ? " He enjoyed that.

We'd both come a long way from the toilets at Brixton Academy ( weird place for a first meeting but there you go !! )

The world has lost a genuine talent & a truly important voice. Not to mention a thouroughly decent human being (almost as rare)

RIP Benjamin, but as always...

...shit on the Villa ! (you'd expect me to say it after all)
