Sorry, to rant, but as a former referee of 27 years I have to defend the profession and dispel some of the myths that seem to be about at the moment.

There are no suce things as homer's. Really. It just seems like it sometimes.
A referee at football league level would not 'even things' up. (However I have witnessed this sort of things at a much lower level. )

It takes a referee up to 10 years to get to football league standard and any faults like described above will be noticed.

A referee wants to get every single descision right and will make them as honestly as possible given his view and position at the time. It is frustrating and disappointing to make errors as it not only affects the teams promotion/relgation chances, it affects the referees too.

A lot of rules use the phrase, "if, in the opinion of the referee....." which leaves a lot of things open to individual interpretation. It would be impossible to have everything tightened up to detail everything that happens on the pitch and one ref may see it differently from another. Hence the apparent lack of consitency.

However, a referee will make mistakes. He (she ) is human. As are the players who will miss open goals, penalties, pass to the other side etc. They do not get their mistakes rescinded, whilst a referee is under scrutiny all the time.

You woudln't expect to be sitting at your desk at work and people crowd round you abusing you, shouting and pushing because you did something you beleived to be right. Why should ref's have to tolerate this? Why didn't they crowd around the Italian scary guy (can't remember his name) He made as many mistakes as other refs.

I think the standard of refereeing is ok. If you analysed a game a ref will probably get about 95% of all decisions correct. Many players don't have that sort of accuracy in their play!

There is a lot that can be improved and I think it could be started by a dialogue between referees, fans, players managers and the media. It should start with an ex-referee on the panel on Match of the Day and explain why decisions are being made and what's behind them - especially to that pillock Alan Hansen who has no idea about the rules of the game and how they should be interpretated!

Yes the ref was wrong in sending of Kisnorbo, but he would have believed he was right at the time with whatever evidence and view he had. SAdly the fine was inevitable. No referee minds his decisions being queried and I understand the frustration and passion behind it. It should never get personal and threatening and beleive me a crowd round you like that is very threatening!

End of rant! Just had to get it off my chest!
