I liked Norman - as you say he always gave 100%. I recall him scoring a terrific goal at Barnsley on a Tuesday (?) night. Sticks in my mind as it was the day HMS Sheffield was blown apart in the Falklands. Also some canny lasses gave us some cakes they'd cooked at school on the bus from Donny to Barnsley.

There used to be a tremendous roar from the old Enclosure everytime Norman got the ball when we were playing towards the Filbert Street End. He would just charge , head down , like as not, along that left side irrespective of the position of team mates.......great stuff.

Do any of the older members remember David Tomlin and Carl Jayes?

I used to watch Tomlin in the reserves in the 1970s and he looked superb - often the best player on the pitch. It seemed that the only thing keeping him from success was that he played left wing where we had the superb Lenny Glover. Then when Glover got injured Tomlin got a couple of games. He looked completely lost and disappeared without trace.
Carl Jayes was the reserve team goalkeeper at the time of Peter Shilton and seemed an excellent prospect - though not to compare with the great Shilton (great in this case being for once the proper word). When Shilton got injured Jayes had one game. he made what seemed to be an fine save but then when trying to throw the ball out put it in his own net. For the rest of the game he looked a bag of nerves and by the next week Jimmy Bloomfield (a superb judge of a player) had bought the excellent Mark Wallington
Both Tomlin and Jayes must look back rather sadly on how their big chance in the Big Time (we were First Division) went so badly wrong.
