Wow, tough question - to be honest, I have no idea. I enjoy a variety of very different music, although I listen mainly to britpop. But the best song ever written, well I'll have to think about that.

What about you?

I really don't know. We spoke about this in the pub last week, and none of us could give an answer. I'll give it some thought and report back.

The Drums- Let's go surfing
Mexican Institute of sound
Clap your hands say yeah- Some loud thunder
The National- Alligator
Pavement- Slanted and enchanted
Orbital- The gun is good
Plastilina Mosh- Toll Free

Gaye Bykers On Acid - Nosedive EP 10"

I grabbed some 10" vinyl today and this one fell out. Not played it for years.
To be followed by...
The Long Ryders - Lewis & Clark
Wedding Present - Corduroy EP
The Fall - Slates
and if I have time John Cooper Clarke - Walking Back To Happiness.

10" records were great.

The Three Degrees - Woman In Love
Ian Dury and the Blockheads - Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll
Traveling Wilburys - Not Alone Any More
The Seekers - The Carnival Is Over
Ottawan - DISCO
Eric Clapton - Lay Down Sally
Slade - My Oh My
Sheryl Crow - Run Baby Run
Bruce Springsteen - Open All Night
Talking Heads - Road To Nowhere

"Weird Al" Yankovic - Ebay Song
Lady Gaga - LoveGame
Barbra Streisand - Don't Rain On My Parade
Carl Douglas - Kung Fu Fighting
Bruce Springsteen - Thunder Road
The Doors - L.A. Woman
Elton John - This Song Has No Title
U2 - Pride (In The Name Of Love)
The Who - Substitute
Neil Diamond - I Dreamed a Dream

Hefner - Breaking God's Heart album.

Fantastic. Brings back memories.
Great album! It's one of life's mysteries why Darren Hayman's solo stuff isn't a patch on Hefner when he did all the writing, singing & guitar-playing.

He gets pissed off with the way everyone always wants him to play Hefner stuff at his gigs these days but he should probably ask himself why.

Leonard Cohen - Whither thou goest
Mika - Love Today
Sylvester - You Make Me Feel
James Blunt - So Long, Jimmy
The Human League - Don't You Want Me
The Tamperer - Feel It
Van Morrison - Wonderful Remark
Rod Stewart - What A Wonderful World
Watergate - Heart of Asia
ZZ Top - Viva Las Vegas

Dylan - Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands.

:018: Right artist, wrong song.

Desolation Row is the best song ever imo. Though Sad Eyed Lady is amazing.

Dylan in his prime was unbeatable. Morrissey is like James Blunt in comparison.

Well, ok, apart from Elliott Smith, but him and Dylan are leagues ahead of anyone else for me. There are other artists who I think made two or three brilliant albums that are as good as anything those two made, but there's no one else whom I would happily rate 6 or 7 of their albums among my all-time favourites.

I think I've derailed the thread somewhat, so I was listening to Pet Sounds about an hour a go if that helps.

I've got quite a bit of time for Conor Oberst, Elliott Smith, Leonard Cohen, Paul Heaton (don't laugh) and Darren Hayman as lyricists and songwriters, but none of them get close to Dylan.

I don't want to criticise Morrissey too much.. there is obviously something there as so many people really enjoy his work, but I can't say there is a single song I enjoy and looking at some of the lyrics, to me, they're just not that great.

Like I said though, it's obviously something I just don't get.

The following songs by Dylan are lyrically spot on. The 3 former probably also have a claim to be 'best song ever written':

Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands
Visions of Johanna
Desolation Row
Angelina
To Ramona

Of course with Dylan, you could just go on and on.

I've tried to follow all the ex Hefner members and probably the best album of the bunch (post Hefner/The French) has been AnT - Footsteps through the Snow

I haven't heard all of Darren's stuff, but some of it suggests to me that the satire/social commentary remains cutting and his observational lyrics are still worthy of attention, but he's forgotten how to write a good tune.

I maintain that the show I saw THE FRENCH live, was the best show I've ever seen.
