You are a spion wannabe AICMFP :icon_bigg

I guess you enjoyed Symphonie fantastique

To be honest, I don't think the SSR conducted version is all that good according to those that know. I listened via Spotify. The version I should have gone for, according to some, is Sir Colin Davis conducting the Concertgebouw Orchestra.

What is your opinion Hector?

I was listening to Radio Sheffield last night, as I do some weeks, and they have a show playing only 70's and 80's music with Phil Butler between 10 and 1 in the morning.
The 10 tracks listed were exactly as they were played last night. I put them down one by one and half way through I thought this is beginning to look like a list of Spion's.

I entirely agree. Although I haven't heard Simon Rattle's version, Sir Colin (sadly recently deceased) was widely regarded as the foremost interpreter of Berlioz (notoriously challenging for conductors), in fact he'd made a life's work of it. Most of my Berlioz collection (including SF) is conducted by him, although I'd put in a good word for the excellent recording of the "Harold in Italy" Symphony (another great work), by Charles Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, with Pinchas Zuckerman on solo viola.

Ten years ago I was privileged to attend a concert in the Barbican, to celebrate the centenary of Berlioz' birth, at which Sir Colin (then aged 75) conducted both Harold in Italy and Symphonie fantastique. Spelldinding performances both, and one of the most memorable concerts I've ever been to.

Incidentally, I've just arrived in Melbourne for a six-month sabbatical, and one of the first things I did, on Monday, was attend a concert of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra performed Mahler's 5th Symphony, conducted by Simone Young, a female person representing a gender seldom found among orchestral conductors. She did a great job.

Sorry, that should have been bicentenary of Berlioz' birth (1803).

Thank you Hector.

I do believe that perhaps this thread has gone upmarket and we will all be the better because of it.

Now then, where's my "Glam Rock 1 Hit Wonders" CD?
