If it's running Vista, I wouldn't even think about having less than 2 gig of ram. I've had it (vista) running on a desktop with a gig of ram for the last few months now and it runs like a dog, ok for websurfing and a bit of word procesing, but desperately needs more memory, and I would never expect a laptop to be capable of any more than very basic video editing. .... Sorry

Agreed, if you're going to run Vista get as much RAM as the motherboard will take & get the best graphics card you can with onboard RAM.

To be honest, if I had to choose between the two I would, I would go for XP over Vista every time.

Absolutely. In terms of added functionality, Vista doesn't really bring very much to the party. A few more pretty things, but I would go for xp every time. Does everything I need it do without the added overhead on resources.

vista does have a good feature in that you can use a memory card as RAM which is useful for laptop users especially.

I know what you're saying DF but is it really that good of a feature?
Having to plug in USB flash drives to try & prevent your OS from grinding to a halt!
besides, I tried it out with a 2GB stick & really didn't see any noticeable improvement.

I also see what you are saying, I understood it only worked with Flash memory cards though....

I also see what you are saying.
Likewise Gents, I also understand :023: but this understanding business gets you nowhere, why not have a good old argument instead. If you feel as though you both offended each other and gone too far then just stick one of these smileys in after each punch :icon_wink

Go for it, there's no room for harmony on Talking Balls my friends

good plan

I've no f uckin notion what you are feckin on about now, you can use any type of flash memory for vista's readyboost to use as a cache, so you obviously understood it wrong. [oof! kidney punch]
If wanky Vista wasn't so feckin resource hungry in the first place there would be no need for it and we could all go back to using our flash drives to exchange porn, bootlegged P2P music & bittorrent movies, which is obviously what they were invented for.

....and you smell like pension day in the post office.

:icon_lol: As I understand it from a recent training session on said product, although you are SUPPOSED to be able to use any flash memory, the current release ACTUALLY only supports SD cards for readyboost.

Well I've searched but haven't been able to find any mention of that anywhere, in fact the MSDN blogs highlight problems with using SD cards for readyboost.
So who knows, or cares?

Vista sucks arse - I've just binned it and gone back to my XP/Kubuntu

not used kubuntu, but ubuntu is the dogs bollix.
I'm just after putting together a frankenstein PC for my young one & have failed in convincing her that Ubuntu is the way forward because of the hassle of running XP apps using WINE, feckin kids never happy.

I am going to ressurect this thread... also looking for a new laptop.

Im looking for one with decent RAM (at least 512). And with a decent battery.
The question is what Operating System to get.

Everyone says the apple macs are better.. how are they better than windows?

And if I am going to stick with windows, how much longer would XP last me before I feel forced to upgrade to Vista?
It will cost me a lot in extra RAM to get Vista running how I want it to so it is a question of XP or a Mac.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Depends what you want to use it for whether you go for a Mac or a PC. :102:

Well, mainly for the internet and schoolwork, but also for listening to music. I don't play loads of games on the PC, only Football Manager which I can do without.

So long as I have a fast computer that is all that matters.

I have just had a thought though... my college uses Microsoft Office only. So will I be able to transfer my work e.g MS Word documents from PC to Mac and vica versa easily?? (via USB memory stick)

Also can anyone else give me more information about Apple Macintoshes?

When you say school work, is that as a student or a teacher?

Have a look at Dell. Talk to your IT people at school, they (or you), could negotiate you a 20% educational discount with Dell, they may run some sort of school leasing system which would enable you to spread the cost.

What makes you think you'll be better off with a mac? Do you do lots of high level graphics work? The price of macs is still pretty high. For the same amount you could buy yourself a fairly high spec Windows machine.

There are mac versions of Office as well as various open source derivatives so interoperability shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Windows XP will be around for a while yet. You can expect a lifecycle of about 3 - 4 years from your notebook, so the operating system shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I would always advise anyone to get as much memory as you can afford, regardless of what you want it for or what operating system you are running.

Battery life is getting better in modern day notebooks, and should last you for a couple of hours between charges, you could always buy yourself a spare battery.

I am a student!
I have done some research and the macs look cool but are just too expensive and difficult.

So lets narrow down the specs. How much of a difference does a processor make as regards to speed? I have seen there is a 1.66GHZ processor or a 2 GHZ version. How much extra will i have to pay for the 2GHZ? and is it worth it for me?

OS - XP
RAM - 1024
Processor - ???
Hard Drive - At least 60GB
Screen - medium size
