Talking to someone today, he reckons the lad who fell is paralytic at every game.

he might be permanently in that state now. Think of the money he will save on drink.

:icon_bigg Just think how empty grounds would be if they enforced it.

That would be wonderful, at least the remaining people wouldn't be dick heads.

Read the Taylor Report; a lot of the reasoning behind all-seater stadia was aimed at the control and monitoring of spectators, not just their safety, and the poor state of football stadia in general.

All that may be so, but the German football authorities seem to be able to control and monitor the spectators in the standing areas of their stadiums, as well as to keep them safe.

Surely the key point here though, is that standing by a seat is a lot different to standing on a railing by a 15ft drop? In fact, considering that stewards maybe ought to have stopped him from doing this, isn't this as much a failure of control and monitoring rather than safety?

Nah, it's purely down to the lad's own stupidity. **** knows why we have a culture that has to pin blame on authorities/alcohol/fate for what can only be seen as a moment of gross stupidity.

Obviously we are having to judge on the facts we are given and if the media have got it wrong it will not be the first time.

Lets not blame the stewards for someone's irresponsibility. He decided and get drunk (if he was) and he decided to be stupid. In fact he owes various people at Scunthorpe an apology since he will have given extra work to a number of people there.

However, I would not be as harsh as some. Alcohol can be a pleasant companion but is an evil master and he will now have time for sober reflection and so hopefully will any friends he goes to the match with.
I hope he will continue to attend Leicester games but in a more sober and w*s*r fashion.

Ther'es a difference between having a dink or two and being giggly(not that i can ever recall you being like that!:icon_bigg) and being so pissed you can't walk straight.
I am not always a mardy arsed cow, y'know!

I'm not disagreeing; I am pro-standing. The Taylor Report even refers to measures taken by European clubs, even back in the late 80s, but the preference was for making us all sit down to behave. :102:

The "Standing" brigade have the support of The Football Supporters' Federation (FSF) who are to launch an online petition calling for the return of standing areas in the top two divisions. The Premier League says "NO" though

Can somebody please explain to me the pleasures of standing at a football match?

Personally, I prefer to stand and watch a match for much the same reasons that I wouldn't want to go to a concert and be told that I must sit down.

Can somebody please explain to me why there shouldn't be safe standing areas available to those that wish to use them?

First of all, I'm a fidget.

Second, why is standing at things like gigs is considered okay, but not at sporting events?

Third, if I find myself near an annoying tit, I can move.

Fourth, it doesn't feel as cold when I stand as it feels when I'm sitting down.

standing at a gig, you are not standing on a stepped slope, there is a whole world of difference.
I doubt you get surges stood on a flat surface.
You get annoying tits everywhere.
The cold thing, you are making that up and you know it.

The safe standing also depends on the attitude of the standing fans. They would not be able to stand in one place and are prone to jumping up and down bumping into other fans, causing surges etc.

TBH in my day I punched more city fans in the gob than opposing fans.

I've seriously sprained an ankle during a surge and the crowd collapsing at a Wonderstuff gig of all places! I've not had an injury that bad at a football match.

The sight of a mosh pit gives me panic attacks. I hate things like that, but I've never felt like that at any football match, barring Peterborough in 2009, where it felt like there were far more City fans on the terrace than there ought to be.

Every single terrace I've been on has barriers in place to prevent massive crowd surges, in any case. I see it as a non-issue.

Would it help to say I could move somewhere with fewer annoying tits?

The cold thing is a fact.

It's not all sporting events though is it?

It's football.

And it's not all football matches. Just the top two divisions.

They'll say it's because you only get a dangerous surge in the crowd at football matches.
But that doesn't explain why it only applies to the top two divisions. And it doesn't explain why small, shallow terraced areas that are safe have had to go as well as the big old kop type terraces.

I've stood at most Carlisle home matches this season. If they made the ground all seater I'd probably go to non-league games instead. Now I've got used to standing at football again I don't want to go back to sitting.

There are also no barriers when you're stood at a gig. It would be a hell of a lot safer to be stood in a properly designed standing area at a football stadium than it would to be at some gigs.
