Absolutely - I seem to recall that Paris also said that he had suffered the same sort of letters. Some people will always use any excuse to latch on something extra, whether skin colour, hair colour, waistline or whatever. I recall an article a few years ago in the observer magazine examining racism and sectarianism among the Old Firm supporters. They remarked on a black lad in the middle of the most vociferous bunch of Rangers boo-boys who fell silent when the rest of them started chanting "black bastard" at a Celtic player. One of his mates put his arm round his shoulders and said "Nothing personal, but we can hardly call him a fenian bastard can we?"
