Redrow could fund Fowler move Jul 9 2007
by Terry Phillips, South Wales Echo
REDROW Homes has given Cardiff City more ammunition in their bid for Robbie Fowler by making a major cash injection.
The Echo understands the construction firm, which used to be City’s shirt sponsors and will build on Ninian Park when the club moves to its new stadium, has pumped in a sizeable sum that could be used to help finance any deal for the former Liverpool striker.
City chairman Peter Ridsdale met Fowler’s agent George Scott at the weekend to try to secure the transfer.
It’s thought a package of around £8-9,000 a week has been offered to the player with significant incentives for promotion and goals scored.
Fowler is understood to be seriously tempted by a move to Ninian Park and against any deal involving a switch to America or Australia.
Wages have been mooted as the stumbling block, but the chance to play regular first-team football at the age of 32 could well swing it in City’s favour, even though manager Dave Jones will offer no guarantees.
There are also suggestions Fowler could be quite prepared to take a pay cut.
His personal wealth, thanks to shrewd property investment, is already estimated by some to be as much as £28m.
Fowler and Chopra together up front? What defense is going to fancy that?
