How's the squad shaping up?

Rudkin's inability to move on players we don't want any more is becoming legendary.

It's pretty easy to sell a Maddison or a Barnes or a Fofana. Even Hirst when the team he was on loan at wanted him to stay. Schmeichel was also an easy sell.

It's his job to move players that don't have an obvious escape route and he cannot do it.

Last summer, we finally sold Ghezzal after he stank the place out for more than three years. We took a fairly typical 80% loss on him but we did get him gone.

Before that we managed to get a bit of money for Gray a few months before he went out of contract. We also got a nominal fee for Diabate and Elder in 2020 and 2019 respectively.

That's it though over the last five years. It's either a player with an easy sell or a total shambles.

If Rudkin can't do it, you'd think we'd attempt to incentivise agents to help. We typically spend in excess of £10m a year on agent payments. We've no idea whether they facilitated the Ghezzal, Gray or Diabate moves but, even if we give Rudkin credit for doing them, he's nowhere near good enough.

You can't sell a player if nobody wants them.

You can't sell a player if nobody wants them.

Who would you say out of the following that 'nobody' wants? Castagne, Souttar, Thomas, Kristiansen, Iversen, Ward (I'll give you that), Ndidi, Praet, Soumare, Daka, Albrighton, Vestergaard, Choudhury?

Just about all of them should have loads of options. They've all got some history that suggests they could have a role somewhere.

I'll tell you what the common denominator is between them all though. Rudkin paid them all far too much money. The gap between clubs that would happily take them on and pay them £x a week vs. what we're already paying them is the problem. And that's all on Rudkin.

One example is Soumare. Various sources online suggest that he's on in excess of £80k a week. I'm sure several top level French sides would take him but the idiotic contract Rudkin handed him is the problem.

Rudkin is now trying to sell a player that wants to go but Soumare and his agent knows that he'll lose a lot of money leaving us. So we're trying to do something where we're facing challenges with the player, the agent, and the buying club.

All this is on Rudkin.

Surely it’s ultimately the owners fault. He employs Rudkin and presumably approves the budget for new signings and player wages.

And you’ve outlined the problem we face in getting rid of players. But the question remains, what is Rudkin or the club supposed to do if clubs don’t want our players or they won’t leave because of the wage they are on here?

I’m with BN. Rudkin is either not good at his job, or just simply doesn’t have the work ethic to perform it well.

There’s no reason Castagne, as an example, is still at the club.

How do we force another club to take him?

He’s an average to good player. He’s probably not first-choice for any club. So they’ll be exploring other options, knowing that he doesn’t want to be at Leicester and we don’t want him here. So, if other options don’t pan out, on deadline day they can offer us a lesser deal which we and the player will likely accept.

Don’t see what we can do about that.

It all comes down to recruitment... Soumare (like Daka) was signed thinking he would turn into a 50+m pound player. To persuade a player with that much potential to join a club like Leicester we have to pay decent wages.
But the gamble has failed and we're left with a deprecating asset that we can't shift.

The only thing I take issue with is the term 'decent money'.

It's clear that we routinely offered exorbitant wages well beyond what made sense.

For me, this makes the Hermansen signing even more ridiculous. We could have spent that money on an winger and then upgraded the goalkeeping position next season, or in January, or back end of this summer once we’ve cleared more out.

The fact we have more first team goalkeepers than wingers is crazy.

Hermansen pretty much plays as part of the back four when we are in possession - his ability on the ball is an absolutely critical part of what we are trying to do

Very clever signing, imo

Yep, none of the other keepers could do what he does.
