I'd be surprised if something hasn't happened behind the scenes. The journalist who broke the story wouldn't have done so because he was a bit bored. Somebody at the club, or somebody close to somebody at the club at least, had told him this.

Players wives/partners were reacting on Twitter, too. Presumably they'd have spoken to their other halves about the situation. I know I'd tell my other half if my boss had been given, or was about to be given, the boot. Bizarre.
