No we are not necessarily any bigger but I am sure that Ipswich feel they should be in the top flight and as a corollary so should we. :icon_bigg :icon_wink

Of course - there are a stack of clubs in our league who believe they ought to be in the top flight.

Unfortunately because of the way that the money and good players are concentrated these days, most of these 'yo yo' clubs are always likely to struggle to get promotion and then face daunting odds to retain their new status. Everyone knows this.

I think we can appreciate now the fantastic jobs done by MON, Jimmy Bloomfield and much earlier Matt Gillies who all made us competitive in the top flight for extended periods. More difficult than ever now.

Which goes some way to backing our saleability (if such a word exists). :icon_wink

True and look at all the yo-yo Clubs that have made it over the years, Ipswich - Robson, Derby & Forest :icon_roll - Clough & Davies, Wigan - Jewell, WBA - Megson :icon_eek: and the common denominator is the quality of the Manager. At this moment in time IH has it all to prove and at the moment I am not sure he is of the calibre of any of the Managers above. :icon_conf

Both Matt Gillies and Jimmy Bloomfield were sacked by the board. If my memory serves me right most fans were pleased to see them go. Thus proving that fans in the 1970s were as negative about managers as fans today. When Bloomfield was sacked we just did not realise how good a manager he had been.

Frankly I think you are kidding yourself if you think we are a significantly better or bigger club than Ipswich. But if that makes you happy - good luck to you.

For pity's sake Redditch - at what level of club should we be comparing ourselves favourably with then?

Wallsall? :icon_bigg

Spot on - a significant section of fans - particularly from the Main stand/ enclosure area chanted 'Bloomfield Out'. They were not satisfied with just being a top half of table, first tier side.

Also wasn't there particular dissatisfaction when I think it was WBA , rather than us signed that winger who much later we got from a Spanish club - the one who sadly was later killed in a car accident?

Thanks Steven - just played a handful of games for us didn't he. Had lost his fitness and exceptional pace by that time.

Just harping back to the Matt Gillies position my recollection is that he resigned in 1969 - our relegation season - so I suppose one could say he wasn't sacked whilst enjoying success. He was an extremely astute manager in his time - tactically ahead of the game defensively. and lucky of course to have two world class goal keepers.

Absolutely criminal, managed us comparatively successfully for 6 seasons (all in the top flight), finishing 11th in his final season, before being hounded out.

The following season, under the glorious stewardship of McLintock, we finished bottom.

The mindless morons, from any era, have a lot to answer for.

What's the chances that the mindless morons that are booing now are rugrats of the mindless morons of the halcyon days;)

True, but there wasn't the gulf between the big clubs and the rest that there is now. I suppose the dissatisfied thought we should have been emulating Derby, QPR or Ipswich and that another manager would get the two or three players we needed to push on. Bet they felt pretty stupid later on.

Fans at most, if not all, clubs often have ludicrous expectations. One of my best friends is an Arsenal fan and he has confirmed to me that there are Arsenal fans who doubt Wenger's policies. I always imagine that there must be about five Crewe supporters who go "Well I think Gradi's run out of ideas to be honest, we should get someone else in." People have short memories and quickly get used to success.

This site has us 22nd all time to Ipswich's 30th.
That's fine, but useless. Franchise FC 52nd?! Not bad for a club that has only just popped into existence.

I think we should only look at history since the inception of the Premier League...and then only up to the end of last season as the shift in finances will lead to another knock-on for the future.

I think we should be comparing ourselves to Roma.

Actually scrap that first one! this is much better. We're two places lower but Ipswich are 79th in it. :038:
