My long nose butterfly fish snuffed it after starving itself to death, i tried frozen food, dry food, live food, but it stuck its nose up at the lot, it occasionally nibbled at the soft coral but not very often, only had it 2 weeks and it died.

I want to get another one but at 40 quid a fish dont want to have the same results.

its a mature tank with no deaths in over 2 years.

Am i doing anything wrong?

Can't you just add some Activia to get the bateria back up? You'd have some unblocked fish for sure :icon_wink
Depends if contains Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter.

Adding milk isn't the best idea.

In this case I'd look at the behaviour of the rest of the inhabitants. Are they all feeding OK?

Newts:

I spoke to a marine expert today. Would you like to know what they said about your problem?

Though I look a bit like an idiot with that condensation joke, I though his tank was cloudy. Then realised that was Duzza!

OK, well I'll type it now in case I don't get chance later.

We went through all the possibilities:

It is not biologically or chemically possible to raise the pH that high from anything you will find in an aquatic shop, which we knew.

"So Melton, we have two options: 1) The test kit is faulty, or 2) Your mate is a thicko? If the test kit isn't faulty, tell him to hand all his fish back"

I then found myself trying to correct the situation, Newts. And that you weren't my mate, just somebody who I knew through circumstance.

I now have a trade reputation to rebuild :icon_lol:

What's Duzza doing in Newton's tank?

Greedy little feckers the lot of them, 2 clown fish, koran angel, purple tang, and a spotty one that name escapes me at the moment.

It's impossible to over stock a tank, fish love to be in close contact, it makes them happy.
I've even seen them at the fishmongers huddling together to keep warm when they are laid out on the ice.

Def not overstocked. It sounds like you might have bought a sick or shy fish.

Did it hide a lot? Was its behaviour unusual in any way?
