If you can't fly direct, I would recommend connecting somewhere you can stop off and explore for a few days, thus avoiding the problems that we had. San Francisco is a great place to explore, even has a Filbert St!!

I agree. We did exactly this and decided that, if we had to stop at San Francisco anyway, we might as well make the most of it. We cut a couple of days off Maui and stayed for 3 nights in SF and it just added to the trip. I enjoyed the city a lot, very different to other American places I've been to and, just as you say, it's a great place to explore.
