Blimey, never seen one of those before.

We do get nuthatches, various tits, robins and a pair of woodpeckers daily in the garden but this Snipe did seem out of place.

It didn't object to being man handled off the drive. Very odd.

That's a big beak!:icon_eek:

And it just let you pick it up?

Yep!

It just stood there as I took the pics and then I slowly bent down and cupped hands and lifted it up and moved it 10 paces.

I fetched it some water (as you do) but it didn't seem very keen on the fuss. I think it must have been dis-orientated and confused. It was gone the following morning, hopefully safely.

I live about 6-7 miles from marshland where it would be more at home, I guess that's where it generally resides.

Nice beak!

snipe are lovely and very stupid, one of my favourite uk birds.

Not rare at all, especially in the winter in the uk (about 120,000).

We are miles from any marshland as well, but the cat managed to catch a sedge warbler a couple of years ago. We've also occasionally had a few reed buntings.

I tried to turn it into a jack snipe for added excitement, but the bill is far too long and the pale crown stripe is diagnostic.
