A friend of mine went to Arizona in the 80's, one thing that stuck in his mind was the sign in a garage, "last petrol for 240 miles!".

Hard to imagine when we are so populated with them.

In Tucson one crossroads sticks in my mind as it has 3 gas stations on the corners, no doubt next time I go back all 4 will be covered.

They're everywhere in the city, but out in the countryside they become a lot more sparse although I've never seen a sign quite like that.

We are talking about over 25years ago, no doubt a few have sprung up since then.

it's just a hole in the ground

No no, it's a really big hole in the ground. There is a difference.

When we went, I said that the pioneers, having trekked for months through forests, plains and then mountains, must have been really pissed off when they reached the Grand Canyon!

It is a stunning sight though, and photos really don't do it any justice.

Finally, the last of my Arizona tour photos.

I'd never been to Canyon de Chelly (pronounced Canyon de Shay) before, but I'd heard good things. Wow! I wasn't disappointed, what a top place!

This tree seems old but is about two feet tall.

This is Whitehouse Ruin, one of the most famous cliff dwellings there is.

This is Spider Rock, the classic Canyon de Chelly view. At this point of the canyon the walls are 800 feet high. I love the two fair-size trees growing on the top of the left spire, which gives you some idea of scale on the zoomed out photos.

Last place, on the way home between the White Mountains and Tucson, is Salt River Canyon. Ever heard of it? Nope, neither had I until I drove through one day. Spectacular!

That's the end of the Arizona tour. It's back to birds next as I catch up with more photos.

And the bad news is that I've fixed my camera so there will be loads more in the future :)

We went snowboarding in the White Mountains last year and came back down that way. Did you spot all the cars that had launched themselves off the cliffs?

Looks like we stopped at the same look out

This was small road trip we did to go wine tasting in Sonoita south of Tucson. A fun day out. The scenery is quite a bit different than the desert of Tucson.

On the way back we stopped at an old deserted ranch.

It was a cool place, and quite spooky.

Suicidal cars that can drive themselves? :icon_conf

Nice photos drew. I get down there quite frequently. Absolutely to die for baked goods at the Grasslands Cafe, when it's actually open.

Back to the bird photos. First, a warning for anyone who's a little bit squeamish that there are some photos coming up of one animal eating another one... meanwhile, here are some nice ducks on the local park pond.

And here's a nasty Black-crowned Night-Heron dispatching a duckling...

These photos were all taken in Reid Park in the middle of Tucson, I suppose the equivalent of Abbey Park in Leicester.
