Speculation The hysterical and annoying, but traditional, totally unfounded spring/summer 2019 rumours thread.

The biggest issue here is that people genuinely think Evans is a better defender.

The first 5 games he played here had me questioning whether JE had ever played football before.

If he's our main man, our leader in the pair, then we might be ****ed.

he was our leader of the pair last season

You stopped watching him after those five games then.

I didn't.

In those games he had Morgan or Maguire with him.

I just don't know if he's capable of becoming the organiser and concentrating on his own game.

Hopefully my reservations are incorrect

Evans very much like Maguire without the sell on value IMO. very good passer, excellent reading of the game. Maybe not quite as good control - Harry is a fine dribbler, but also crucially a bit susceptible to a slip up once in a while!

If I was to have my pick of who I'd want us to bring in as a replacement - it'd be Nathan Ake.

what do you expect from Adrian Durham
the bloke is an absolute moron the best comment was when we won our opening game 4-1 and Durham said it did not matter as we were favourites to be relegated in his book. sat with a huge grin when we won the league and beat his guilty pleasure Spurs as well .

The wolves game in particular he was slaughtered despite being the only central defender anywhere near where they should have been.

Exactly. Evans is a good defender when he has good or experienced defenders around him. It's ludicrous to suggest he is better than Maguire, he isn't, or at least, he hasn't yet shown me enough to suggest that he is. This is why we need to invest in a replacement for Maguire otherwise it could all go badly wrong pretty quickly. I have never known a player so undervalued by some as Maguire. He will be exceptional for Manchester United and I can see why they did everything the could to get him.

(Cue the regulars with their nonsense about 'No faith in our players' blah, blah, zzzzzzzz).

As well as being technically and tactically excellent, Evans has one key quality that makes him a class act.

He makes anyone that plays alongside him look a better player. He talks through the game, he organises the line and marking, etc.

It's the same role that Huth had and it was why we were so much better whenever he was in the team. I'd genuinely fear for us defensively more if Man Utd had signed Evans than Maguire.

Perhaps it was his head being turned last season but Maguire really wasn't that good. The season before and the later stages of the world cup he was great. Evans was better last season. There should be doubts over the players we've got but haven't seen much of but I have no issues with Evans.

He was well looked after here. When he steams out of defence at Man Utd, nobody will be slotting in behind when he loses the ball like Ndidi used to. When he is expected the play a higher line and match striker runs and is out-paced easily, he'll miss Ricardo or Chilwell bailing him out by covering round. Nobody at Man Utd will do that as well.

He's an excellent defender but he's nowhere near a £85m one. He'll do okay and nothing more at Man Utd.

Maybe it was Maguire who made him look better. Time will tell. This tactical genius ended up being shipped out by Manchester United after loan spells at Antwerp and Sunderland before plying his trade at West Brom for a while.

I'm not saying he's a poor player, I think he's great but better than Maguire? Absolute drivel. There is a reason why Manchester United and others have come in for Maguire and why they didn't come in for Evans, even with his bargain basement price. We got a fabulous deal signing Evans but I'd swap him for Maguire every single day of the year.

Your interpretation of his defending is questionable at best. As I say, time will tell. I think he will be exceptional for them at both ends of the pitch.

Sam Vokes outpaced him in the opening minute at Burnley last season....

**** it anyway. I made a Harry Maguire voodoo doll at the end of May. If the deal goes through I'll snap its ****ing legs off as soon as he's signed his contract. If that works then we've got a fabulous deal & we can piss ourselves laughing at Utd all season.

On a serious note though, as long as we've got a contingency plan I'm not anywhere near as fussed over this as some on here. Manure are a ****ing joke & it'll take a lot more than Harry to sort them out. The dressing room runs that club & Ole will be gone by January most likely. First mistake Harry makes that leads to a goal & the entitled wankers in the crowd will crucify him. I suppose a 400 mile round trip to see your team at home every other week gives you a sense that you have the right to demand the exceptional.
