McGrath was bang on about our deals earlier in the window. Looking increasingly likely that Vestergaard is the one.
Leicester have held talks with Southampton to sign Jannik Vestergaard as they attempt to bolster their injury-hit defence for the start of the Premier League campaign.
The Saints centre-back is among their top choices, with Wesley Fofana and Jonny Evans ruled out for the start of the season.
Brendan Rodgers previously looked at the Denmark international two seasons ago but a £25 million move could not be struck. He is expected to be available for a lower fee as he has one season left on his contract at St Mary’s, where he has been for three years after arriving from Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Fofana has a medial ligament injury to his knee which will rule him out for the rest of the year, while Evans is sidelined until at least September with a foot problem.
Leicester’s shortage of centre-backs has brought the likes of Schalke’s Ozan Kabak, on loan at Liverpool last season, and Bologna’s Takehiro Tomiyasu to the table as defenders currently on the market who could provide cover.
Vestergaard has also been on West Ham’s radar but their No1 choice for a centre-back has been Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenković and they are working torwards signing the Serbian international.
Southampton ideally want to keep Vestergaard, who has been a regular under Ralph Hasenhuttl. The 29 year-old went to the European Championship with Denmark and reached the semi-finals where they lost to England. With his contract expiring in 10 months, his club also know they risk losing him for free at the end of the campaign.
