Andy Goram aka 'The Goalie'. ffs he was only 58. Diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in April and given six months to live, but didn't even get half of them.

sad times, saw him on a kids' show on CBeebies recently and thought it amazing that he was still making stuff
 
Rest in Peace Mikhail Gorbachev and thank you. . He was surely the greatest leader since Churchill. Obviously Nelson Mandela was a great leader but apartheid was already fragile and would have soon ended without him Mandela liberated one country. Gorbachev brought freedom to over a dozen countries When he came to power in 1986 America and the Soviet Union were threatening each other with nuclear weapons and people trying to escape East Germany were being murdered by border guards. There was no sign the Soviet Empire would end within five years. He stood resolute against the KGB including a young Putin who wanted him to use Soviet troops against the people One of the countries he freed was Ukraine.

& a victim of his own successes. The only world leader worth a damn at the end of the 20th century & the beginning of the 21st, left sitting on his hands in retirement while 2 bob chancers like Clinton, Bush & Yeltsin stumbled about on the world stage like the 3 stooges, setting up the future for the likes of Putin & Trump. A historical missed opportunity. A post Soviet Russian Federation with Gorbachev at the helm sees us with a very different present.

Well we’re flying to Belfast next month and driving across to near Derry to visit my Wife’s great gran and introduce her to her first great great grandchild. She’s 96 and makes her way across the village for a pint and a toastie most days. Sharp as a pin, mobile and way more independent than many people 20 years younger than her.
