My next book, due for release on the academic community in 2009, may well reach the parts (of the world) other books have not reached. Unlike my peers, I am on the streets with pimps, punks, whores and... ordinary joe public in all his glory. I have seen things that would make your toes curl. Addendum: Well not you Macky, you are worldly wise, but some of the others. Whose idea of vice is to have one pint too many and knock over a road cone.

academia knows me alone, as a writer.
But as a local activist & educator and also an entertainer (really, a paid one) I am known locally. None of these have any idea of the other things I do but they may suspect a somewhat unorthodox life as they did recently wonder why I had two black eyes and an arm in a sling. (Some guys peddling crack with amonia in it to some of my subjects/respondents didn't take kindly to my objections - I didn't object to their trade per se, just to their burning holes in their lungs with amonia. I don't think they understood the distinction between the two things that I was trying to make; I guess I could have told them to take notes and split into seminar groups to discuss this but they were too busy letting me immediately know their true feelings on the matter)

The girls - two of my interviewees - reported to me the quality of the product consumed and I fed back the customer feedback to the retailer when I chanced upon him again soon after. I had misjudged how vicious he might turn. I'd gotten away with too much verbal yet no physical comeback for too long and I got complacent. macky, I'm afraid my nightcap of a little too much weed last night loosened my fingers upon the keyboard much more than desired in retrospect. No more in-depth details henceforth. Suffice to say, my research is into the seedy underbelly of cities. I am more cautious now about where and how I do my field research, but it can get hairy at times because you cannot invite these people to set appointment times at your office. You have to go out to them on the street, where they live.
Back to lighter stuff, from now on, I hope.
