I doubt if there will be anything like 2,000 SW fans in the home end. But any number brings with it the risk of outbreaks of violence and it is something that the club and police will want to avoid.

Sheffield Wednesday fans who come by train will find it relatively difficult to get into home areas because they are likely to be escorted from the station and only to the away turnstiles.

It is also against the ground regulations for an away fan to enter or to attempt to enter home areas of the ground*. We will have to see how much attention the stewards and the police give to that. If there has already been trouble before the game, there is less likelihood of away fans getting in to the wrong areas, I would have thought.

Jeff says that home and away fans can sit together without any trouble. I would suggest that this might be one game where this is not likely to happen. I have no objection to away fans coming into home areas as long as they behave themselves are 'respectful' of the fact that they are where they should not be. If it is otherwise, I expect the stewards to eject them without delay. I would have no qualms about identifying an away fan to steward if I thought that was the only way to avoid later trouble.

* It may also be a criminal offence but I can find no reference to it.

But how will the police know who is an away fan?

I'll be on the same train and I don't want a police escort to the away end.

If the police decide you are an away fan, that is what you are likely to get. You may need to be able to prove that you are not an away fan.

They don't care, is the simple answer.

So how exactly will that stop Wednesday fans with tickets in the home areas?

It won't, I didn't say it would, it will mean however that you don't have to go to the away end.

I was responding to something Boc said about Sheff Weds fans not being able to get to home areas of the ground due to the police escort. So if that's the case the police will obviously not accept having a ticket for the home area as proof that you're not a Sheff Weds fan.

The first match ticket I purchased from the club was for the game at Spurs just after that horrible League Cup final. I was living in north London, as I have done for 11 years, and remember being very nervous about whether they would actually sell me the ticket, but there were no problems at all, and that was definitely a match where trouble might have been anticipated.

Reasonable people are perfectly capable of behaving themselves when sat with opposition supporters. Unfortunately there are a fair amount of idiots around. I hope the Sheff Wed fans who sit in my row aren't too fat.

... particularly when you've just got off a train from Sheffield.

I live in Sheffield and am a season tiket holder.

Every time wednesday have come down they have stopped every one on my train who looks like there going to football and asked them to come to one side only on showing my ST do they allow you out the staition

If you have a home ticket and can't be identified as an away fan (ie. not in colours or known to the police) the police wouldn't have a clue if you were an away fan and wouldn't escort you to the away end. It is the clubs job to make sure that they don't sell tickets to fans in the wrong areas and police will only get involved to stop trouble, if you were an away fan with a home ticket you'd not be escorted.

the only time i have ever seen propper fighting at the walkers was against wednesday the season they went down after a 1-1 draw, it all kicked off on the roundabout near the Seat garage

I'm now wondering what the police definition of someone who 'looks like they're going to football' is. Pity anyone who decides to come from Sheffield to Leicester to visit friends and happens to be carrying a Tesco carrier bag.

You've obviously not been to many away games by train if you believe the police behave like this.
There are occasions when everyone is escorted to the ground, and any attempt to avoid this is greeted by abuse and a police dog snapping at your heels. Even people who are not there for the football can get caught up in it.
It doesn't happen very often - and I don't know if it's something Leics police do, but I generally avoid taking the obvious trains to high profile away games because of the heavy handed policiing that can happen.

I remember several years ago when we played at there place, they'd just won the league cup so the home areas were sold out, but the away end was pay on the turnstiles. Loads of their fans went in the away end and there was no trouble at all. I realise it wasn't such an important game, but there's no reason for there to be any trouble if people behave sensibly.

If I may be so bold, I think that is a bit naive Jeff. There's a lot riding on this game and passions will be running high.

I remember loads of times at Filbert Street when other fans (particularly Chelsea for some reason) got into the Kop and there was all sorts of trouble once they became 'known'.

They most certainly do.

I travel to all away games and to as many as i can by train with my wife, never been herded by the police.
