My Ph.D students thought our building was goimg to go up as well. They asked me what would happen if the unique plants they had spent over two years developing (and on which their theses depend) were destroyed - I didn't have an answer!

At least in my trade, fire is one of the last threats to the valuable livestock.

They need to develop proper back up procedures that allow for the storage of material in more than one location.

If it's one plant per student, then some of them will lose out.

To make a plant container fireproof would also make it impossible for the plant to survive, I think.

Yes, we shall have to seriously address this. Its not as easy as it sounds though. There aren't many options available meeting the rigorous requirements for genetically modified plants. Also a lot of them are kept in sterile tissue culture containers in specialised controlled environment rooms.

I do have some ideas on how to approach it though.
