Not sure what assistance you expect the linesman to be able to do. He would probably been in line with the last defenders for any potential offside decisions and with it being so close to the 18 yard line he ad a worse view than the ref to say whether it was in or not. To him it would have looked well inside with the momentum of the players etc.
