Shame we couldn't get him... think he could've done a good job for us

Not sure how he'll do at Boro... think he needs a tough manager to sort him out a bit... and Southgate isn't that.
Having said that... he'll get a lot of good service at Boro

It is getting to be a worry that we cannot get anybody in who is proven at this level.

Indeed.

Before the close season I was optimistic of a play-off push, expecting us to get some quality in over the summer. I'd only really class Hobbs and Wellens as ambitious signings and we seem to be losing the battle to sign any player we have competition for.

Howard and Fryatt are an ok pairing, but no more than that. Injuries aside, they're good enough for a mid-table finish at best. We do have some goals in midfield, but not enough to compete for top six.

Still, not going to panic yet. As you say, however, it is a worry that we're either too poor or too unattractive a proposition to compete in the transfer market.

Janns Kermit wouldn't really make me any less concerned about our strength in attack.

One problem with signing a striker is that we already have two established strikers who played well last season. Any established striker is going to want to know that he will have a run in the first team. I thought Howard was excellent against Valladolid and Fryatt who was clearly not match fit took his goal well. A Leroy Lita or a Kevin Phillips may feel they would struggle to get in the team. They would not want to be on the bench as backup to Fryatt or Howard.

I for one don't think we should expect any more. We have made bids for players we feel would be decent assetts, but only at the price we find worthy. So far NP has made very astute decisions and I trust him and his team implicitly. It could easily turn out that Cox is not good enough and Lita is on silly wages - let's not forget Reading turned him out.

I am sure we are looking at other options and would be surprised if no one else came in prior to 31 August, but that player will have to fit the mould as cast by NP, which I support.

Spoke to a mate who leave in Reading over the weekend. He reckons Reading fans were glad to see the back of him, and he's got a bit of a attitude problem. Last think we need is a another DJ ...
Get Philips in.

Yeah, I'm so glad we didn't sign him. :icon_bigg

Boro's been a bit of a graveyard for strikers in the past certainly in the last couple of years. So Lita could be another of these in deed as I'm sure he's going for the money I will be pleased to see him fail particularly when Boro play City

I'm just amazed he didn't go to the mighty PNE.

Presumably he could not face competing for his place amongst their striking giants:
Lita 7 goals from 16, 44%, Mellor 10 from 21, 48% and Brown 6 from 16, 38%

Boro's strikers have not scored a dozen goals between the lot of them all season!

And he was obviously afraid of the mighty goal machine Fryatt!
