Lineker v The BBC

Whether you agree with what Lineker said or not you cannot dispute that he did not mention the Nazis. You have a big red ring around some of his words and I can’t see the word Nazis. If that suits your agenda, then nothing anyone says will change your mind anyway.

is your patience telling someone to **** off? Telling someone to **** off is unreasonable, I am not playing the victim I put forward a point of view which was obviously counter to yours, your immediate response was to hurl pejoratives.
I notice, however, you’ve ignored my calm, reasoned post.

There was a lot more going on in Germany in the 1930’s than just Nazism and the Nazi party.

That’s why he said it. It’s on the reader if they hear ‘1930’s Germany’ and immediately, like Father Jack, shout ‘NAZI! HITLER! AUSCHWITZ!!!!’

And let’s not hide behind debates about employment law and BBC policy because that’s really not what’s for sale here.

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

Right this is for both you and Homer. I do not have an agenda. Gary Lineker said and I quote " In language that is not dissimilar to that used in Germany in the 1930's, and I am out of order?"

What do you think Lineker was referring to here, I wonder if you asked a person in the street what imagery would it evoke if you asked them what 1930's Germany meant?

Lineker knows dam well what he is saying when he mentioned 1930's Germany and to suggest otherwise is Churlish at best.

Oh indeed. Absolutely. Predictable too. It is kind of dangling it out there even if you don't intend it, and I don't think Lineker is naive. I think a degree of furore (not fuhrer!) was foreseeable and, I personally believe anyway, would have been avoided by choosing other wording. That is, if one really doesn't want that association to be made.

But I'm not critical of him saying what he said, nor his right to have a personal opinion that is clearly distinct from that of the BBC's aimed-for impartiality. I'm just (needlessly) quibbling over the words he chose to make his point. It's what I do.

I think we can agree that however arguably/demonstrably correct 'language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s' may or may not be, it is certainly a statement that would provoke and inevitably lead many to thoughts of Nazis & the holocaust. Lineker was naive if he thought that wouldn't happen, so for that reason alone it probably wasn't the wisest of analogies to use. That said, I'd defend his right to use it.
totally concur

So, to summarise the last few days, for those who have not been paying attention:

Gary Lineker tweeted to say Brendan Rodgers is a nazi. The BBC responded by telling Rodgers there's a job on MOTD for him if he wants to replace Lineker.

Jermaine Jenas came out in support of Lineker and said he refuses to do any more work for the BBC. Everyone cheered.

Alan Young posted on MySpace to ask why there wasn't the same reaction when Radio Leicester dropped him from the commentary team.

Peter Shilton told everyone in his local bookie's that Lineker is a woke snowflake avocado eating Trotskyite, and Goering would be able to sort our defence out.

We lost again. BR is still in charge.

Hiya, can you reply to mine, or are you just choosing ones that you can think of a response to? Xx

I'm fed up with the sanctimonious, smug git and all the wailing and weeping over the martyrdom of St Gary.

Good, ignore it then. No one is making you read his tweets or any of this.
