nice to hear a bit of passion from a veggie, I gave up trying to influence what people ate years ago. Fair play FF!

I actually agree with pretty much everything he's said.
No animal should suffer to put food on anybody's plate, and they don't need to.

The argument that it's about keeping prices low so that poor single mothers don't starve to death is specious as well, it's got **** all to do with that. It's about keeping profits for supermarkets as high as possible.

Animals could be well cared for in humane conditions without affecting the price of the products that they produce. Prices are charged at the price the market will bear.

Thanks, MK! Glad there's someone else that cares on here.

I can easily understand why you gave up; mention any other act of cruelty and people will quickly agree, but tell them that you're a vegetarian and they'll argue til they're blue in the face as heaven forbid that they make a sacrifice from their lifestyle.

Don't you dare go soft on me, Macky. :icon_lol:

And thanks for adding 'specious' to my vocabulary.

How do you think vegetarians survive?

I've often wondered about that seeing as most of the ones I know seem to be pasty faced and constantly suffering from some mild illness or other.

That's interesting, considering that on average vegetarians have better diets and live longer than non-vegetarians.

Maybe it's because they aren't using all the beauty products that have been tested on animals.

Either way, if looks are more important to you than ethics, then that's your decision.

At least my username still makes sense :048:

Ouch, hit me where it hurts. :icon_cry:

Clearly you're happy either remaining ignorant or not caring though. And that's your free choice.

TBH I really couldn't give a flying **** about animals that are reared for food, at some point they are going to be killed anyway and as a rule livestock in this country are looked after pretty well, for commercial reasons more than most albeit.
I also buy all my meat from a local farm at Market Bosworth, and if I ask nicely they can usually tell me the name of the beast as well. The reason I buy from there is that I know the product is top quality and not paying supermarket rip off costs.

Good man, it's the way forward :038:

You can easily buy products that havent been tested on animals in every major supermarket/Boots store in the country. In fact I'd say that products tested on animals are very much in the minority now.

I think I'm following this argument from FF. It's wrong to treat animals as a food source, even though without having done this the human race would not exist. It's cruel to farm animals, although FF gives the impression that he's never actually visited a working farm to assess this cruelty.
Nature is essentially cruel, it was this realisation that prompted much of the outcry when Darwin first published his theory. Farmed animals have a safer, though unnatural, existence than any wild animal.
I've never understood why some people regard keeping an animal with the ultimate intention of killing it to provide sustenance as wrong, whereas keeping an animal as a pet to provide oneself with pleasure is desirable. Although to be fair FF does not make it clear whether or not he regards all exploitation of animals as wrong. He does, however, find it acceptable to degrade animals pictorially in avatars.

It's wrong to treat animals as a food source

That's the only reason most of them are here in the first place as they are bred specifically for food.

If they weren't to be eaten they wouldn't be bred.

Just to be clear I was summarising FF's argument, not making that point. Read my post properly please.

So if farming is wrong, is killing wild creatures for food acceptable?

I actually find fishing more cruel and damaging to the environment/livestock/etc than farming.

But that's just me, I'm guessing.

It takes 15 times as much land to produce protein from beef than it does from Soya beans.

If everyone became vegetarian it would have a massive effect on the environment. We could produce more food from less land, using less energy, creating less pollution and CO2.

You couldn't raise soya beans on a Welsh hillside like you can lamb.

Yes, and I was confirming that particular fact. What on earth led to you believe that it had anything to do with the proper reading of your post :102:

Damn right.

Just imagine all that flatulence.

You said it, Spion.

Away games are bad enough as it is, without forcing the person with the rotting guts to eat pulses etc.

Then I apologise. I thought you had taken one part of the post to make it look as I thought it was wrong to eat meat.
