It's not really that much of a gamble for Pearson though (depending on the player). It's not his money...

If we'd got the money to spend, Pearson would be spending it.

All this talk of Pearson/Mandy wanting this season to stabilise, and that it's better to be comfortable in this division before getting promoted to the Premiership etc is pure bollocks. There is no way either of them would not do everything they can to get promoted this season, and get the big cash influx that getting to the Premiership would bring. Crazy to suggest it.
Mandy would see a load of money come into the club, and probably find someone willing to buy him out if we went up.
Pearson would see his reputation increase massively, and it would be a huge accomplishment to get us promoted this year.

To suggest that we're just choosing not to spend money that is available is absurd.

Let's have a look at NPs signings shall we, and then judge them on whether or not they have been 'superb' or not.

Morrison
Powell
Tunchev
Dyer
Gilbert
Hobbs
Brown
Neilson
McGivern
N'Guessan
Kermit
Wellens
Gallagher
Ajdaravic(?)
Verma

Now - those castigating N'Guessan and Gallypants I feel are being a little quick to judge. On the whole, the signings NP made won us League One and have us in touching distance of play offs in the Championship - for the first time since Micky Adams.

Players he has bought like Morrison, Tunchev, Hobbs, Wellens & Dyer I think could be absolutely tremendous players for City - really of the level we have wanted for quite some time.

As Redditch has mentioned, MM has funds to gamble with. I just don't think steady Pearson wants to gamble.

2 out of that list have impressed me this season. Forget last season, most championship players would look ok in the third tier.

Why wouldnt Nige want to add to the squad. He must see the areas that need improving.

Could it be MM wont back him with funds and a new contract, hoping we get in the Prem on the cheap :102:

fact is our squad is not short on numbers, but is short on quality in every dept.
it's the 28th of Jan so this is not going to change dramatically either in or out.

the change needs to come on the training ground, in the form of the players and a more consistent selection policy. Unfortunately, form and consistency go hand in hand. So it is down to Pearson and his staff to sort the problem - not the non existent magic wand.

also - if Mandaric is subsidising a 6m shortfall per year then the club as a business must be being run very badly from a commercial sense. Average of 23k gate. Non star name players on non premier league wages.
Where can the 6m shortfall be coming from? It isn't old debt - because that's been paid down or lost via administration.

I would agree as far as N'Guessan is concerned, but where does Gallagher fit in to the city style of play? In the right team, Gallagher is a class act now, but not in this team.

The other slightly depressing thing to note from your list is that the earlier signings were of more value to the squad than the latter. Wellens, for example, is a good player but, is too similar to Oakley and King and I still cannot believe that anybody scouted Neilson before signing him.

One final point, in today's newspaper, Cardiff have issued an apology to their fans for not being in a position to make signings during this transfer window. I am sure that their fans will get behind the team, understanding the situation: how much better is that than the constant dis-information that we are fed?

Cardiff fans have the right to be angry!

They were told to renew their season tickets early for next year so that the club had money to spend on transfers in January... lots of them did that, then the club turn round and say that actually, the money isn't going to be used for that after all.

I'm guessing it was never going to be - they must've known that they didn't have any money and that the renewals were going to cover debts.

really alex??? you think the signings of neilson, mcgivern, gallagher and wellens have been 'superb'?????:icon_wink

Wellens was an improvement on what we had, Gallacher major flop, Neilson and McGivern were both free, so MM won't be too fussed. Pearson has probably always been aware that the money won't be spend....he's always had use loans and freebies. The scouting team are probably more focused currently on looking at a list of players whose contracts are running out...

I think Gallypants will come good personally, he is more akin to the type of football and player I hope NP is leading towards - Wellens too.

I simply cannot believe that MM would not want to gamble to get us up this year - perhaps NP feels we have enough to mount a challenge as it is? I don't think that's wise, but down to him I guess! Frustratingly I think we are just a few players short of a very very good side indeed.

I can't believe people are slagging gallagher off he is just another player being played out of position!! He is also a very good player who obviously has a very good footballing brain every time he gets it he is looking to play it in to space it is not his fault the others are too stupid to run into that space. IMO he should be fryatts strike partner.

Agree. Gally may have been disappointing, but I think he has shown enough underlying quality to merit giving him some time. N'Guessen and Wellens certainly have as well (Wellens was for my money the best player in the squad for the first 10 or so games of the season). NP's signings (including the loans of Cleverley, Davies and a number of decent goalkeepers) were central to winning us League 1 and I have every faith in his ability in the transfer market (admittedly Nielsen appears to be a diseased donkey with little knowledge of spherical objects, but we'll forgive NP this one). As has been said, Tunch, Hobbs, Morrison, Weale all look like excellent signings.

But NP is reasonably cautious in the transfer market and has repeatedly said that they won't rush into signings, they won't sign anyone unless he feels they're an improvement on what we've got and they won't spend over the odds on players. Maybe he'll surprise me, but I don't expect money spent on anyone in the next few days and I don't think that's a terrible thing. Have a go at the play-offs with this squad and if it's not to be, there's a decent amount of youth at the club who will improve.

Has Gally been used in his correct position?

Just on the subject of Alex and Lazzer's comments re MM's wealth.

As I'm sure they already know, The Times listed him in its top 2000 as having £75m.

I'm not sure that is likely to provide a vast available resource of liquid cash for the sole owner of a football club. these days.

Well if thats what the Times said then it must be correct. After all he is not the type of chap to have massive wedges tucked away offshore is he? Shame about the 100 mill he had to "leave behind in serbia".

I seem to recall Hoos stating not so very long ago that the club was being geared to being self sufficient and not having to rely on Uncle Milan to subsidise it.

This too me is the indication that any funds for players in this transfer window would have to be generated through additional revenue streams and income such as a decent cup run and monies from the sale of players.

I still believe that Fryatt will be sold to enable Pearson to strengthen the squad.

I must say I think this is true, but I don't think NP has identified a target (Taylor-aside) that he wants in, which is bemusing to me personally.
