So who would that relate to?

The two year rule was brought in to stop countries importing decent players from places like Brazil, and immediately making them citizens of that country so they could play for the national team.

In places like England where it's not so easy to become a naturalised citizen the two year thing isn't really relevant.

Me, contrary? Yes, probably. But is he really Irish? Does the location of an ancestor's birth really determine your nationality? I'm not sure it does. How far do you go back to determine what nationalities you can claim to be?

I think you need to go far enough back to the days when your ancestors were half caste? :icon_wink

Does Everton's Arteta qualify under the 5 year rule then, or as he played for Spain under 21's is he ruled out

Players are allowed to change their nationality - but only once during their career. And they're only allowed to play for another team if they were eligible for that team when they played for their first national team.
So Arteta can't play for England because he wasn't eligible to play for England when he first represented Spain. If he'd never played for Spain he could now play for England. If he'd not played for Spain until recently, he'd be allowed to change his nationality and play for England.

That's not how I read the rules.

The two year rule only applies to players who hold nationality for a country, but they weren't born there and don't have a parent/grandparent from that country.

If a player doesn't qualify under the above rules, they must have been resident in the country for five years, after reaching the age of 18.

My point was that it is no longer necessary to search for a relative who was born in the country and that a residential qualification will suffice in some circumstances .

Thank you for the fuller explanation.

bentleys/ft reckons santa cruz has signed on loan!,....as if!
Having spoke to my mum I can confirm that Santa will be coming at christmas. Jas will be pleased.

Not this again :(

Have a search for the last time someone used the racist term 'half caste' and educate yourself.

And you from SE London?
And don't call them coffee coloured either as that offends Mr Ken and co. FFS. :icon_roll

Last time someone used it you weren't here to object, but I was :icon_bigg to cut a long story short, it can safely be assumed it's not being used seriously here.

So will Santa. Only comes one day a year and that day is getting ever nearer.

Nope, I think he was here. I used it and ChrisFilter got upset about it, I didn't mean to upset anyone at all though and there was quite an interesting debate about it. As a result, I don't use the term anymore - I have no desire to offend anyone with my nomenclature.

Ah, fair enough.

Was nice to see Wayne Brown being so widely booed, even if not entirely because he's a racist tw@t.

EDIT: Oh, and nice one for pointing it out on the Apprentice thread.. no-one means it badly and it's not entirely fair to expect everyone to understand why it's considered offensive, but it's good that when people are using it, it's pointed out.

PC police, over and out.
