I thought Newell held talks with another club in the summer, was he not in the frame at Derby before Davies went there?

Maybe his plan took the Luton board longer to stump up the new deal.

We have no leadership on the pitch, and we have none off it.

The board seem clueless as to how to improve things (asking us how to improve atmosphere), they don't appear capable of making a decision (running votes on whether people want smoking/bands etc). Is this the way a successful business (which is what football is at this level) should be run?

No.

It's consulting your customers - surely that is the right thing to do if you want to retain them?

I think the problem stems from the board, if the board has no ambition then it will feed down the stems and the manager will have a low target.

Curbishley would never come without the proper backing in the transfer market he can get better jobs then us. We couldnt even attract newell.

Does ambition = money?

Does ambition = taking the risk of making the club go bust, not to return

Define ambition in your eyes Chrysalis

I'm not absolutely certain that the board's good practice of consulting its customers on smoking and 'improving the atmosphere' within the stadium is going to quite enough to compensate for its financial incapacity and ineptitude that prevents it from running LCFC in the way that most supporters think acceptable...and to exercise some strong decision making in the appointment of the sort of manager that is likely to play a strong role in meeting those aspirations and maintaining the traditions of the club as a competitive force.

I understand that RK is a bit of a 'reluctant hero' and never threw himself at the job...and my main sentiment when appointed was to feel sorry for him.

Lets face it....the club is going down and down and down...and the bottom line for the FT is that it is essentially an apologist for the board.

Ambition has nothing to do with money, it is about being positive and wanting to make a difference regardless of circumstance. There are very few business that will ever throw money at a problem, what they will do is look to it's employees and Management to rise above the parapet and with innovation, determination and hard work turn the situation around.

Ambition comes from the very top, if the top men are dynamic and have a defined vision of what they want the business to become, it's principles and a realistic plan of how it can be achieved then it can then be cascaded down to the rest of the employees and just as importantly it's customers.

IMO that ambition does not exist at LCFC, neither does the innovation, drive and determination to succeed. It is a club treading water, who are unable to divert away from Plan A, their one and only plan. As for Kelly, why didn't he be a little more innovative in his summer dealings, he went out and blew the budget on 4 players, 2 who seemed to be signed as a contigency in case we lost Kisnorbo and / or Stearman. Why didnt he look to the loan markets, as well, sign a couple of players on season long loans, as proved with MDV you can sign up players for a fraction of the wages instead of shelling out on signing on fees and wages for what can only be described as mediocrity. In McAuley we are now infact stuck with a player who is not good enough and possibly not even needed. Shocking waste of what money was available.

Watford won promotion because they were innovative and the drive and determination to succeed started from the very top and engulfed the whole club, this positive approach catapulted them potential relegation candidates to the premiership, the enthusiasm throughout the whole club was infectious.

Now compare that to us, we have a board prepared to accept mediocrity, surviving in the division is now success, no innovation from the boardroom to generate new or increased revenue streams, just the same old tired methods. Imagine what message that sends out to the Manager, the players and worst of all the fans. It is a cancer that is running through our club and we need to deal with it NOW !!

Well said, also why didn't they look to the overseas market, oh don't tell me we don't have the money for even a part time European scout.

excellent post :038:

It's clear to see that someone needs 2 or 3 seasons to build some solid foundations.
we were saying this 2 seasons ago, will you be saying the same in 2 seasons time? will we be in league one?

Yes, we were saying it 2 seasons ago - but what we haven't done is allowed anybody enough time to build on their foundations. All we have done is expected instant results, campaigned for the sacking of the manager, finally got our way and started again. If we go through this procedure time after time, we will still be saying the same thing in 10 years time!

What's so wrong about being in League One? If that's what it takes to get a proper balance, let it happen. In 10 years time, we will be wondering whether it di F!"£$t much harm.

What does everyone want ?

The board to be more autocratic, making decisions without consultation, and the end to the fans forums (what do they do?) and Q&A's.

Or the board to be more democratic, consulting with fans, with more dialogue between the club and fans.

Most people want something to start to happen wether that is autocratic or democratic makes no difference, the trouble is people see we have a board which contains no, or very little, football experience and a manager who is in his first job and it makes them wonder if there's anyone who really knows what they are doing.

I would suggest (and hope) McDonalds is run as a very different business model to LCFC. Our new 'leader' during his first interview actually complained that the season tickets are priced lower than a few years ago. Did he actually stop and think what kind of signal that sent out and that we no longer have cup tickets and reserve game fixtures as part of the package? Sorry, I digress.

Can anyone tell me, if we were to get relegated, what would happen to the club? Would we go into admin again? Would we fold completely? Would we survive at all? If we did survive, would we be able to compete?

Let's examine what the club has been democratic about - it seems to me that it amounts to just two things; Fosse or City, and Smoking or No Smoking. The first of these was hardly of earth-shattering proportions and the result of the second was likely to be forced on the club as a result of legislation in any case.

I think what most people want is for the club to be run by and for the decisions to be taken by people who know how to run a football club. Consultation with a group of people, most of whom don't know how to run a football club (whatever they may think), is neither advisable nor necessary.

Completely agree

There is a clear difference between making clear and strong decisons about running the club (such as sacking a manager) and obtaining feedback from your customers (the fans) and then making changes to accommodate what is obviously wrong, or what could improve what is currently just adequate.

That is why you end with ridiculous ideas such as the fekkin' band, or having your first team shirt designed by a nine year old.

It also led to the embarrassing dilly-dallying about regarding the sacking of Levein. You don't run around asking everyone's opinion over things like that - you just do it.

Sadly we appear not to have anyone who is capable of deciding whether to have custard creams or bourbons for the next (pointless) meeting

Here is my four peneths worth on the subject...

We currently have a board that have obviously got their own opinions on what the club should be doing, but the problem being is they have an equal right to do so, we have got several rudders trying to steer the same boat so the journey is always going to be long and hard. Now I can see that the board was put together to safeguard the future of the club after admin and I feel that the job they have done so far has achieved this, what this doesn't allow us to do IMO is become a successful club as no risks are going to be taken. Do not get me wrong I am not talking about throwing money around and ending up as we did before, but every decision being made at the moment seems to be the very safe one's with not alot of risk finacially.

On the team side we have a very young squad with bags of potential being led by a very inexperienced management team, the senior players that we have here are of no real quality with regards to being able boast any standing in the game so the younger players do not have anyone to look upto (hope that makes sense). The lack of goals is the area IMO that this stands out the most, who do Hume, Fryatt, O'Grady look to? in a match situation nobody is there to shout and give guidence on when to make a run and give advice based on experience when things are not going to plan and the big centre half has got them in their pocket. RK can give instructions but it is the players that need to make decisions on the pitch to turn games around and that is where we never seem to look as if we have a plan B, even RK wants to change something he has not got the back p on the pitch.
RK has made mistakes it seems at the moment with regards to him signing defenders, the centre midfield is shocking IMO, Williams never delivers what we know he can do, Hughes is too lightweight to boss a game, Johnson has been a big let down since signing, his legs have gone so he is never going to be too effective, Weso looks the best of the bunch, but he is only 18 years old and coming back from 2 broken legs, far too much to put on his shoulders.
RK did a great job keeping us up, but he had an old head in Graydon behind him, how significant is it that he has gone?
RK will do a job for us, the squad will do a job for us, but they will not meet what the expectations of a majority of fans have.
Over time you could say we have a great future with this squad, but do we have that time??
