The police are blinkered to the job in hand and half of them do not know what the feck is going on. The story below nearly became very nasty.

A few seasons ago when we were playing For*st at home I caught the usual 1:15 train from Syston to Leicester (it came from Loughborough) on going up the stairs ALL of the males coming up from the platform were stopped and told to stand to one side, they then asked where we were going, which we replied the game but need a pint first jokingly.
We were pushed back and told we were going nowhere, there must have been around 30-40 in the crowd from our train, we told them where we had come from, showed our city shirts and season tickets but again pushed back. The arguments started to get very heated as we tried to explain we were home fans and more coppers arrived to keep us back. After about ten minutes and very close to boiling point another copper appears, says "they are home fans let them through" and the tw*t that five seconds before that was shouting in my face said "oh o.k, off you go"

I was dragged away before I said or did something stupid, so forget tickets, colours or whatever, if they want to stop you they will.

Fans of Reading Football Club say they were the victims of "illegal searches" by British Transport Police (BTP).
The Police can stop & search anyone they have reasonable suspicion to believe is in possession of alcohol and is going to a football match under the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol) Act 1985. Reasonable suspicion has a low threshold. Bizarrely, there is no power to seize alcohol if they find it.

The Police can also apply for a stop & search under the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, s60. It is indiscriminate, however constables are allowed to exercise their discretion.

They may get out of this one....

I thought they could seize alcohol now, or is that just for underage hoodie yobs on the street?

i would do that just to be safe IMO

I'm not worried about being 'safe' on the journey down, I just thought it might be better to travel down a day early so I can see family etc.

I'll still be going back on the same train as the Sheff Weds fans, unless I get to the station by 17:10 and go via Nottingham. That would probably mean leaving the match before the end and I don't want to do that unless the result is beyond doubt. I certainly won't be staying behind to applaud the players for their 'effort' this season.

Jeff are you intending on getting the 17.24 service as far as Derby then changing for the Newcastle train? If so the 17.24 termintes at Burton on Trent, so I don't see this being much use to the Sheffield Wednesday fans. Their direct train is at 17.39 so I would guess they'd get this rather than changing at Derby :102:

Sheff Weds fans getting the 17:24 will get to Sheffield earlier than if they get the 17:39, so I don't see why they wouldn't use that train, if they get to the station early enough.

Maybe the BTP will decide they don't want loads of fans changing trains at Derby, so won't let them all go on the earlier train. But the 17:24 is the latest one I can get and still get home.
