No, it's a sensible rule.

If clubs spend lots of money developing players from a young age they should be rewarded for that, and not see the players able to walk away for nothing. A lot of small clubs rely on the sale of home grown players to survive.

I agree Jeff, but I still think that it could be open to a legal challenge as soon as the fee set prevents a player making a move he wants to make. I'd have thought this would restrict free movement of labour, and I'm quite surprised it hasn't been challenged already.

Allowance for the rule was specifically made in the European Court Rulings in relation to Bosman.

I don't think we've got much chance of signing him permanently, but I would at least hope we're doing everything we can to persuade him to stay (including offering him a fat contract for the summer)
