I think this mocking of people for questioning whether Remy fits into our side because people used to question Yakubu for not "running round a lot" is missing the point.
Our entire style of play and the reason we are top of the league is because of our high energy pressing game and team spirit and Vardy leads the line in that. Now, are we going to make Remy the main focal point of our attack to facilitate him over Vardy or is he going to play the support role Okazaki and Ulloa have had to do? Or are we going to make Remy now the focal point of our attacks and drop Vardy back to the support role moving out to the channels to stretch defences which he played last season. Or are we going to play both as advanced forwards and negate any kind of linking role?
Remy has never been known for his work rate it pressing game, it was always a criticism of him when QPR signed him and people were questioning whether he fitted in.
He's also a French international and a much bigger name than anywhere anyone in our squad has come from. Will we feel obliged to fit him in? Will he be able to settle into the cliched team spirit? Will he be on bigger wages than everyone else coming from Chelsea which will cause other first teamers to feel a bit bummed?
I was a massive fan of Yakubu when he was here, but signing Remy definitely makes me feel a bit uneasy and I'm not sure he really fits in with what we are about as a side.
Steve Walsh is the best scout in the country imo, but when he was at Newcastle under Keegan he recommended Faustino Asprilla who is often considered the signing that cost Newcastle the title and had that debilitating affect on the dressing room and also their style of play which was built round Les Ferdinand up front and constantly trying to shoehorn Asprilla into the attack negated some of Ferdinand's presence. Asprilla wasn't a bad player at all but he just didn't suit Newcastle at that time.
And I dunno. There is a bit of an air of that Asprilla signing for me about this. You do get the feeling Eder, who is known as a hard working, high pressing forward was our first choice and Remy wasn't. I hope Walsh hasn't made the same mistake twice.
That said, I obviously hope all that is proven horribly wrong and Remy is a massive success but I can certainly see why people have reservations over this and not in a "he's shit" or a "he's lazy like Yakubu" kind of way.
