Newell has achieved far more than Kelly and you cannot compare the Luton situation with our own, whilst Kelly has not been afforded the biggest transfer budget to work with neither has he been forced to clear the decks of all his best players and be expected to replace them on a shoestring.

Kelly has IMO under achieved, and there is little doubt in my mind that had Newell been given the resources at Kelly's disposal we would be in a far better position. Also given both managers track record on signing players I know which one I would prefer to see entrusted with spending MM's money.

So what had Martin O'neil really done before he came to LCFC.

I know we took him from Norwich but he was in the lower legues for years with Wycombe.

Hardly anything to write home about before he was given the chance to do more with us.

Mike Newell got Hartlepool promoted/play-offs and then sacked, then got Luton up with little/no money and a made a team :102:

Sounds promising to me?

Probably not MM though. He will try to do one of two things I believe. He will try and make a splash and sign a "Teddy Sheringham type" manager or go after someone who has managed in the PL. ;)

But just because he is now available, it does not mean he is the best or the right one. I would hope that there are better managers than Newell currently available now and almost certainly quite a few more better managers in May/June.

Please don't say you want Pearce here?!

The guy is an even worse choice than Newell in my opinion.

I agree. IMO Pearce has been found out for what he is this season. Respect his abilities as a player, but he isn't a good manager IMO.

melts i wouldnt mind simon grayson, he's proven himself at balckpool, maybe as an assistant manager to someone for a while?

That's exactly what I was thinking, he's done a decent job at Blackpool and was a great player for us. He would definitely be committed to the job but doubt whether he could handle the pressure. IMO would be a gamble to appoint him Manager but probably one I would take if there wasn't anyone else available that had a much better record. Doubt he would become assistant manager unless the manager had some connections with Leicester as well, Lennon the only possibility I can think of at the minute because Neighbours is on!! Grayson & Lennon would be pretty dodgey though IMO.

I would personally hate an ex-player (that isn't proven in management) to become manager. I don't want anyone I liked or respected to become a figure of fun or someone we later resent for failing.

Kelly is an ex-player...can we please think with our heads a little more. Silly emotional choices don't usually turn out to be excellent management material.

But Keegan went back to his old club Newcastle and took them into the Prem.

That is not supposed to be an argument of Newell coming here! It is an argument in favour of Keegan being a good manager!

I'd very much like it if Keegan were here. I was just arguing against daft inevitable suggestions that Walsh or Grayson or McCallister et al would be a good choice because they used to play here.

I can't think of a worse reason for appointing a manager.

I agree SF, as for Grayson he is still relatively unproven, I have no doubt that he has started well with Blackpool but he still needs IMO at least another two years learning his trade before he is in a position to be considered for the managers position at the Walkers, Newell on the other hand has been fairly successful over a sustained period of time and IMO is now ready to take on a job at a club of our size.

I would have thought getting a non-league team into the league and then promoted into (what is now) league 1, was quite an achievement, and a pretty sound indication of the guy's potential.

Newells been sacked off the back of the article that started this thred. plus other reasons...

http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=454532&CPID=10&clid=102&lid=4&title=Hatters+dismiss+Newell

Newell has been dismissed after The Hatters slipped into the relegation zone after just one win in 14 Championship games.
He had been at the Kenilworth Road helm for almost four years after a brief spell in charge of Hartlepool United.
But his dismissal comes on the back of heavy criticism of the Luton board, with Newell questioning where money from the sale of key players had gone.
Speaking after Tuesday's 2-1 home defeat to Hull City, the ex-Hatters striker demanded answers with regards to the sale of the likes of Carlos Edwards and Rowan Vine.
"Where's the £9million gone?" said Newell.
"Give that to me and I'll get five experienced players in, I'll pay them fortunes and we'll get ourselves out of it.
"It takes three or four years to build a reputation as a decent manager and three months to lose that reputation. But if you take the four best players out of any team it will hurt them.
"Give me the money and I'll replace them - but I can't.
"The reason we're in this position is because we've sold our best players. Someone should investigate what's going on at this club."

and thats the bit that got him the sack i would think

I'm not sure about Newell. Has anybody given any credence to the thought that MM might bring a Director of football in to oversee RK. Give the neccesary experience backing he needs.

You make an excellent point, it's certainly been something he was keen to do at Pompey, he lost Harry once because of it. I wonder whether the ego of MM would allow the signing of Newell in some ways.... He seems to like installing men with whom he can have influence over on the pitch.

Given a choice, I wouldn't want Newell managing Leicester City.

But, if he was offered the job tomorrow I'd be bloody ecstactic. Anything is better than our current resident incompetent
