Re: Chelsea / Brum v Leicester FA Cup Quarter Final - Sun 18 March

It's a sad state of affairs that it's the TV companies who choose when football matches are played. The fact that football matches are played for the convenience of the TV viewing public, and not the fans who actually go to the games sucks.

The FA are already talking about moving the FA Cup Final away from its traditional Saturday 3pm slot to make it an evening kick off. That way it is more marketable and they can make more money from it selling the tv rights around the world. They also seem to think that the fans would much rather the match be on in the evening than during the afternoon. In addition they are keen to avoid it clashing with the final matches of the Premier League. Once it moves from that spot, that will be it, it won't move back.

There used to be a time when if you couldn't afford to go to a game, or you couldn't travel to get to a game, you'd accept the fact that shit happens, and get on with it.

Now with virtual constant coverage of football on TV, some people expect the likes of Sky to accommodate them. Yeah, there's a lot of them out there, but the money they pay is small fry compared to the advertising deals etc. It's all about money, which only ends up in the pockets of players and their sycophantic agents.

You don't actually need Sky. And as much as I love football, there's only so much time I have to dedicate to watching hours and hours of it. If people got rid of their Sky contracts, they might be able to afford to go to the occasional game; those fans who support teams lower down on the greater scale might actually see their team more times than they do on the TV.

I can't wait for the bubble to burst, if I'm honest.

Hmmm. I'm delighted City are on telly all the time. Your view is a wee bit myopic.

dpj-you do but compare your seasons matches to Brums. You should get 6 points from next 2 games but then you hit serious traffic.I would have thought NP would have realised the damage of the cup if he really thought play offs a possibility. If NP can get you into play offs he will be manager of the season and I will be the first to praise him.I fear he may be working as santa in a local shopping centre by mid December with a sack containing nothing but his incredible pay off

1. Yes, it's the tension and those decisive moments that could turn everything around that I like about sports, and knowing that it's not live would spoil that for me.

It's good to know though that you don't mind getting your enjoyment at the expense of that of other people.

Doesn't Lisa's view mean she'd get her at the expense of others? For what it's worth, I agree with Lisa's point of view, but don't think it will ever change. Like Swede though, football isn't a huge part of my life anymore, I watch City but that's about it really.

As Matt says, you can't please everyone, so it depends on who you think the game belongs to. Alf (sorry, I just think that's a great name), and thousands like him, can't afford a season ticket at Anfield Road, but Li in China, and millions like him, has found a new favourite team and can't wait for the weekend to come.

Does English football belong more to Alf than Li? Can Alf say: what have you done to football? I can't go anymore! Or can Li say: Alfie, look, this is fair for everyone - you can watch it in the pub on TV, I can watch it in Asia on TV. Now more people can enjoy the football on TV instead of a selected few inside the ground.

I understand that the English fans couldn't give a flying feck about the rest of the world (just as we sometimes don't really grasp the inconvenience that a re-scheduled match might cause), but there are many of us who would never had been introduced to English football if it wasn't for televised matches, and the clubs have started to see that we are numerous - especially in Asia.

What p*sses me off though is that the Sky money is many multiples the gate money, yet it goes all on players when some of it could go on keeping ticket prices down. Why do we have to pay 2 or 3 times what most of the rest of Europe pays to watch a game? Because they can is not a proper answer. I am sure that if ticket prices for us were only £20 instead of £30 we would have a huge increase in gates, and consequential spending in the shop and concourses, and even maybe better results from bigger, better support.

I saw that, it made me angry.

As is yours.

This one could be major; I've got another (non-footballing, though I could actually put a footy spin in there somewhere...) rant I really ought to write up first ;)

Me in a nutshell.

Until then I'll have all the TV and streamed footy I can please.

Exactly, we all want our cake and to shovel it down, myself included.

Fans want instant success which forces clubs to pay over the odds of sensibility which means ticket prices stay high. The brand is seen as entertainment, which is it, so is a luxury item and so they charge more, the same as theme parks and cinemas.

Tickets on sale from Friday March 9th. P2 on sale on Saturday 10th. Nice and convenient for those of us going to Reading.

The day I can stream a theme park into my lounge for free I'll be a happy man indeed.
