Avoid all the annoyance of trick or treaters on October 31st by attending the Old Aylestone social club for an evening of classic rock with Teenage kicks.

On the plus side though ... it's the one night of the year that my ex-wife is allowed out without a bag on her head.

something that has come over from the USA

Not true. Common misconception.

It's from the Celtic festival Samhain, and it's been adopted by pagans. It's a festival of the dead; if I remember rightly, the veil between the earth and the afterlife is at it's thinnest, so people believed that they could contact their loved ones and/or ancestors.

Or something like that.

Nearly spot on.

Halloween isn't purely based on Samhain, it's an amalgam of lots of different traditions. Most cultures celebrate at that time of year, all marking the end of the summer, harvest festivals and the autumn equinox.

Re: Hallowe'en

Got to agree with Harbs on this one. What a bag of shite it truly is.

And Easter. And Christmas. And Tuesdays.

What about Tuesdays with football?

Re: Hallowe'en

Well it's the Trick or Treating that comes from the muppets over the water.

Isn't it also cos it being All Hallows Eve they 'celebrate' the dead thing cos November 1st is All Saints Day? Or am I just thinking they are linked when they ain't?

:thumbs_up

Isn't the thread title spelt wrong though? :102:

all year round we tell kids "don't take sweets from strangers", then send them round to strangers houses for sweets on halloween.... load of old bollocks.

Just stock up with chocolate laxatives and hand them out freely

I know this was a joke, but I'm tempted, any idea where I can get hold of some?
